A predictable sequence of calming activities not only promotes better sleep but also strengthens the bond between parent and child. How to create the best bedtime routine for a 6 month old
1. Follow a Consistent Daily Flow
Babies thrive on predictability, but they aren’t robots, so we do need to allow some flexibility within their timings. Following the same awake windows each day, rather than set timings for naps and bedtime, can prevent overtiredness. Aim to have your baby wake within a similar window each day (eg 6-7am) and go to bed within a similar window too (eg 7-8pm). This allows for variable wake up times and nap length every day. This helps to regulate their internal clock, but prevents overtiredness, and makes bedtime smoother
2. Create a calm environment
Dim the lights and reduce noise half an hour before bedtime to signal that it’s time to wind down. Using blackout curtains and creating a dark environment will help to build melatonin levels to help your baby fall asleep. Neutral decor and minimal toys kept in the bedroom can also help.
3. Follow a three-step routine
Choose three calming activities to repeat every night. I often recommend:
- Milk: A feed is an important step in the routine. And I recommend giving it outside of the bedroom in a bright space.
- Bath time or top and tail: A warm bath relaxes the body and mind. A bath isn’t needed every night, you can just do a face and hand wash or top and tail in the bathroom so you have the familiarity of this bedtime step in the bathroom.
- Story time: Reading together promotes bonding and helps transition to a quieter state.
4. Limit stimulation
Avoid screens and overly stimulating activities at least an hour before bedtime. Blue light from devices can interfere with melatonin production, making it harder for babies to fall asleep.
